Scuttles

An experimental cryptocurrency game

In 2018, an old friend wanted to experiment creating a crypto game inspired by PacMan.
He and his team came up with the game concept for Scuttles, and I was hired to create the visual concept, illustrations, animations and branding. It was fun to think about player perks and economy, as well as the new concept of blockchain and how cryptocurrency might be gamified.

The Game

The Story

You're a crab trying to decorate your little crab crib, so you venture out into the reef to collect treasures. You mostly find bits of metal you can turn into bigger treasures and decorations, but sometimes you get lucky and find whole treasures!

Game Concept

Instead of “eating” dots like Pac-Man, our crab’s goal is to collect the “dots” and points (from special items and eating enemies) which can eventually exchanged for decorative items for its crab crib.

Concept Art

Crab Designs

The crab has been designed with 4 different colour options, for the multiplayer mode. There are two modes: Normal Mode and Hunt Mode, for when the crab gets to eat its enemies and other crabs players.

Enemy Designs

There are 5 different types of enemies, each with two options for designs.
Enemies turn pale during the Hunt Mode, and might flash white when animated.

Collectibles and Power ups

A hierarchy of collectibles were designed, along side power ups in the form of sea anemones and power boxes.

Maze Design

The maze would need to be digitally generated in the game, hence, it was  designed as modular blocks.
