Meditation and mental health support for healthcare workers

Developed by the Altruism in Medicine Institute, the AIMICare app is designed to help medical practitioners counteract burnout and alleviate the unique pressures they face.

I was brought on to create visuals and motions for the app, to bring out the themes intended by the app. During the project, I consulted on developing the brand style and UI with their product team to achieve the right emotional expressions.

The Brief

Users are likely to interact in a state of high mental stress
The target audience are medical practitioners looking to counteract burnout and alleviate pressures. There is a high chance that they may be using the app in moments of high stress, or as a way to decompress after difficult situations.
Visuals that support the experiential intention of the app
The client requested a high number of visuals and motions for the app. Being a meditation app meant to soothe and calm, it was of utmost importance that the visuals express a high level of emotional empathy to support and not overwhelm.

Creating a Safe Space

Introspective Characters

Almost taking this literally, all characters would be illustrated contemplatively, with their eyes closed. This prevents any faces from demanding too much attention from the user, no matter how subconscious, in the app.

Meditative Nature Theme

Leveraging the calming presence of natural motifs, leaves and water feature heavily in the visuals and motions. This manintained consistency with podcast thumbnails, which were all photos of nature.

Maintaining a realistic balance

Death and Compassion

Illustrating topics relating to death required a careful balance of empathy. These visuals were designed to be respectful yet tender, with falling leaves signifying passing.

Limiting Distractions

In an experience so focused on creating a space to process emotions and  relieve pressures, it was key that visuals were soothing. Motions were kept to a minimum, with small gentle movements.
